On the night of September 29, 2019, crews completed the final steps necessary for the I-5 Empire Avenue interchange in Burbank to be opened to traffic. This modern facility includes on-ramps and off-ramps in both directions of I-5, the Empire Avenue I-5 undercrossing, the Empire Avenue railroad underpass, and the Victory Place bridge over Empire Avenue.
Here are some scenes of the final hours leading up to the opening, which occurred about 5:30 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2019.
Looking east on the eastbound side of Empire Avenue at the I-5 undercrossing, with traffic signals activated. Notice the equipment on Empire Avenue and workers in the crosswalk. This view is from the railroad underpass; part of the underpass structure is visible at the right edge of the photo. To the right of the traffic signal is the on-ramp to southbound I-5.
This wide-angle camera view is looking south toward the on-ramp to southbound I-5 (in the background at right). At left is the Empire Avenue freeway undercrossing. At the right edge of the photo is the railroad underpass. The wide-angle lens creates a curved image of the straight lanes of westbound Empire Avenue at the bottom of the photo.
Note: the cover photo of this photo gallery shows crews removing material that covered a sign on I-5, revealing the “Empire Avenue/San Fernando Blvd” exit name.
