Due to the extensive rains of this past winter, there were delays in completion of the current phase of construction. Current construction hours are 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
The contractor is constructing “falsework” (temporary frame support) for the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge in the median of I-5, just north of the existing bridge. Photos below:
We opened a new FOURTH freeway lane to traffic on northbound I-5 from Alondra Blvd. to the Orr & Day railroad overhead north of Imperial Highway. At that point, it narrows back down to three lanes. After completion of the Florence Ave. interchange, the northbound fourth lane will extend almost to to I-605. Map below:
In the next few weeks we will paint striping and open a fourth lane on the southbound side of I-5 from the Orr & Day railroad overhead north of Imperial Highway all the way to the Orange county line, where we will match the number of freeway lanes.
The contractor completed pouring concrete for the new lanes in the median of I-5 north and south of the Florence Ave. Bridge. Video below from October 1 shows 360 degree pan:
Drone aerial photos from Oct. 11 below:
The Florence Ave. on ramp to northbound I-5, and the Florence Ave. off ramp from northbound I-5 will all remain closed until the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge is complete. This is per request by the cities of Downey and Santa Fe Springs, to minimize traffic congestion until the three additional bridge lanes are provided to handle the increase in vehicles. Construction of the second half of the bridge is projected to begin by autumn.
