Florence Avenue Interchange Project – May 14-21, 2021

The northbound I-5 Florence Ave. on and off ramps opened to traffic on April 22, 2021.
The Florence Ave. on ramp to southbound I-5 opened on May 13, 2021.

The essential construction of this project is now complete. There will be a one-year period of plant establishment and some possible minor tasks over time. All new on and off ramps and all lanes on the new bridge are open to traffic.  There are four lanes open to traffic in each direction of I-5. The new HOV lanes are expected to open by mid-2022. Caltrans thanks the cities and residents of Santa Fe Springs and Downey for their cooperation and patience.

The new Florence Avenue loop on ramp to southbound I-5 opened to traffic on Thursday, May 13! Traffic may access the on ramp from either eastbound or westbound Florence Ave. with traffic signal control.

The new I-5 (Santa Ana Freeway) northbound Florence Avenue on and off ramps in Santa Fe Springs are now open to traffic! The ramps opened shortly before noon on Thursday, April 22.

The Florence Avenue on ramp to northbound I-5 is open. The on ramp is accessible from eastbound or westbound Florence Avenue with traffic signal control.

The Florence Avenue off ramp from northbound I-5 is open. Traffic may turn left or right onto Florence Avenue from the off ramp with traffic signal control.

Workers installed palm trees along the median of Florence Ave. on both sides of the Florence Ave. Bridge on Wednesday, Apr. 21.  Photos below:

On northbound I-5 there are now four all-purpose traffic lanes on I-5 from north of Valley View Ave. to the Florence Ave. Bridge. Then there are three all purpose lanes, plus two auxiliary lanes connecting to the northbound and southbound I-605. Under the I-605 Bridge, I-5  reverts to four all-purpose lanes, plus a fifth auxiliary lane connecting traffic from I-605 to I-5. Then it reduces again to four all-purpose lanes.

On southbound I-5 there are now five lanes where traffic merges from the I-605 interchange until the Orr & Day railroad overhead. Then it changes to four all-purpose lanes until south of Alondra Boulevard, where it reduces to three lanes approaching the Valley View Avenue interchange project that remains under construction until mid-2022.

When the Valley View Avenue Project is complete in mid-2022, we will open the additional car pool / HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes to traffic. At that time:

  • On northbound I-5 there will be an HOV lane from Valley View Ave. to the Orr & Day railroad overhead.
  • On southbound I-5 there will be an HOV lane from south of the Florence Ave. Bridge to Valley View Ave.
