Florence Avenue Interchange Project – March 5, 2021 – March 12, 2021

This project is 93% complete.
Projected date of opening for the northbound I-5 Florence Ave. on and off ramps is extended to * March 2021.
Projected date of opening for the southbound I-5 Florence Ave. on ramp is extended to *March of 2021.

Recently completed: 

  • *Permanent closure to through traffic on Dollison Drive at Studebaker Road effective Tuesday, December 15.   
  • *Final striping of Florence Avenue between Studebaker Road and Orr & Day is complete. 
  • *Construction of concrete pedestrian crosswalks at interchange of Florence Avenue and Orr & Day is complete. 
  • *Construction of the median traffic barrier on I-5 south and north of the bridge is complete. 
  • *Construction of the median between the east end of the bridge and Orr & Day and between the west end of the bridge and Studebaker Road is complete. 
  •  *Pouring of final 2-inch rubberized asphalt on the roadway surface between the east end of the bridge and Orr & Day and between the west end of the bridge and Studebaker Road is complete.  
  • *Installation of traffic sensor loops below the roadway surface and installation of a traffic signal at Orr & Day is complete. 
  • *Installation of  traffic barrier on new southbound Florence on ramp completed Friday, January 8. 
  • *Installation of final safety fence on north side of bridge is complete.

Still to complete::

  • Re-strip freeway lanes and shift lanes toward median. 
  • Install crash cushion on northbound Florence off ramp. 
  • Install guardrail on northbound Florence on ramp. 
  • Install safety posts & signs at Dollison Drive cul-de-sacs at I-5 and Studebaker Road and at Dollison Drive and Fairford Drive.  

The following I-5 full freeway closures are scheduled for March 5 through March 12 to grind, stripe, and shift traffic lanes:

11:59 p.m. Friday, Mar. 5 until 5 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 6:

  • Northbound I-5 closed from Norwalk Boulevard to I-605 from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Southbound I-5 three left lanes closed from I-605 to Imperial Highway & again from Rosecrans Boulevard to Artesia Boulevard from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m.
  • Southbound I-5 all lanes closed from Imperial Highway to Rosecrans Ave. from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m.

11 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 7 until 5 a.m. Monday, Mar. 8:

  • Southbound I-5 closed between I-605 and Norwalk Boulevard. 
  • Northbound and southbound I-605 connectors to southbound I-5 closed. (Starting at 10 p.m.)

The nights of Monday, Mar. 8; Tuesday, Mar. 9; Wednesday, Mar. 10; & Thursday, Mar 11:

  • Southbound I-5 closed between I-605 and Norwalk Boulevard from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Northbound I-5 closed between Norwalk Boulevard & I-605 from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Northbound and southbound I-605 connectors to southbound I-5 closed. (Starting at 10 p.m.)

The night of Friday, Mar. 12:

Northbound I-5 closed between Norwalk Boulevard & I-605 from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Alternate route: Use southbound I-5 to southbound I-710 (Long Beach Freeway) to eastbound State Route 91 (Artesia Freeway) back to I-5 and the reverse route for northbound traffic.

For the past two weeks, crews have been grinding and re-striping southbound lanes on I-5 between I-605 and Aretesia Boulevard and shifting traffic lanes back towards the median. 

The city of Downey will also be installing four more new light standards. Two at the cul-de-sac on Dollison Drive at I-5, one at Fairford Drive and Dollison Drive, and one at the meandering walkway at the Dollison/I-5 cul-de-sac.
