Workers removed the forms from the vertical stem walls on the first section of the new bridge construction and placed them flat across the stem walls to serve as a base for the next layer of rebar and concrete. They are called “lost forms”, because they will be encased in concrete as part of the permanent bridge, but not part of it’s structural support. They are now building a “mat” of rebar across the forms. Videos below from February 11, February 18, and February 25, 2020:

Crews excavated lanes on the west side of I-5 to lower them up to four feet as they run beneath the new bridge and then graded, compacted, and re-paved them. Traffic on the connector from southbound I-605 to southbound I-5 was shifted toward the I-5 median and onto newly paved lanes on January 30.

The Florence Ave. on ramp to northbound I-5, and the Florence Ave. off ramp from northbound I-5 will all remain closed until the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge is complete. This is per request by the cities of Downey and Santa Fe Springs, to minimize traffic congestion until the three additional bridge lanes are provided to handle the increase in vehicles. Construction of the second half of the bridge is underway.
