Florence Avenue Interchange Project – December 6 – December 13 , 2019

Scheduled to be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. the nights of Sunday, Dec. 8 through the night of Thursday, Dec. 12:
Southbound I-5 all lanes closed from I-605 to Norwalk Blvd. 

  • Southbound I-5 closed between I-605 and Norwalk Boulevard, between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. DETOUR: Southbound I-5 traffic will be directed onto southbound I-605, exit at Firestone Boulevard, east on Firestone Boulevard, east on San Antonio Dr., south on the Frontage Road to the southbound I-5 on-ramp.
  • Northbound I-605 Connector to Southbound I-5 closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. DETOUR: Motorists will exit northbound I-605 exit at Firestone Boulevard, east on Firestone Boulevard, east on San Antonio Dr., south on the Frontage Road to the southbound I-5 on-ramp.
  • Southbound I-605 Connector to Southbound I-5 closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. DETOUR: Motorists will continue on southbound I-605, exit at Firestone Boulevard, east on Firestone Boulevard, east on San Antonio Dr., south on the Frontage Road to the southbound I-5 on-ramp.

During these nights, the following ramps will be closed at various times, depending on the progress of the work;
The Imperial Highway off ramp from southbound I-5.
The Norwalk Blvd. on ramp to southbound I-5.
The Imperial Highway on ramp to northbound I-5.

At various times, one direction at a time will be closed on the following streets:
Norwal Blvd. and Imperial Highway on both sides of the I-5 interchange and Pioneer Blvd. from San Antonio Dr. to Crewe St. 

To install traffic sensor loops in the ground. 

The contractor is constructing the falsework for the soffit (underside) and stem walls of the deck of the second half of the new Florence Ave. Bridge over I-5. Video below from Nov. 26:

Crews are now excavating  the closed lanes on the west side of I-5 to lower them up to four feet as they run beneath the new bridge. Video below from November 26:

The Florence Ave. on ramp to northbound I-5, and the Florence Ave. off ramp from northbound I-5 will all remain closed until the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge is complete. This is per request by the cities of Downey and Santa Fe Springs, to minimize traffic congestion until the three additional bridge lanes are provided to handle the increase in vehicles. Construction of the second half of the bridge is underway.
