Due to the extensive rains of this past winter, there were delays in completion of the current phase of construction. Current construction hours are 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
Over the summer, the contractor will be excavating earth to lower lanes in the median of I-5 and then paving the new lanes. Then construction of falsework (temporary frame support) for the second half of the bridge will continue. The target date to begin construction of the second half of the bridge is now Autumn of 2019.
Scheduled to be closed to erect freeway overhead signs –
11 p.m. Sunday, August 18 until 5 a.m. Monday, August 19:
Northbound I-5 all lanes closed from Norwalk Blvd. to I-605.
Northbound I-5 connectors to I-605 closed. Northbound Norwalk Blvd. off ramp remains open. Traffic detoured north on Norwalk Blvd., west on Imperial Hwy to I-605 north back to I-5 north.
Alternate route: Northbound traffic use westbound SR-91 to northbound I-605 to northbound I-5. Southbound traffic use reverse route.
Crews are now excavating, lowering the roadway surface in the median of I-5 up to four feet passing under the bridge, and grading before repaving. Videos below from July 30:
The contractor is using a “crusher” and conveyor to crush all of the concrete from the old freeway lanes that were demolished into small aggregate that will be recycled and used a base for the new lanes. Then the aggregate is distributed along the median. Videos below from July 30:

The contractor is constructing “falsework” (temporary frame support) for the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge, just north of the existing bridge and west of I-5. Video below from July 16:
Photos below show progress from July 16:
The Florence Ave. on ramp to northbound I-5, and the Florence Ave. off ramp from northbound I-5 will all remain closed until the second half of the Florence Ave. Bridge is complete. This is per request by the cities of Downey and Santa Fe Springs, to minimize traffic congestion until the three additional bridge lanes are provided to handle the increase in vehicles. Construction of the second half of the bridge is projected to begin by late summer.
